Dr Ishania Mahabeer

It was more than just a clinical task; it was a profound moment that left an indelible mark on my heart. Some call it job satisfaction, but that term hardly captures the incredible feeling of being able to assist a woman and her newborn baby at the start of their beautiful relationship called motherhood. Witnessing the joy and relief on the mother’s face as she held her baby for the first time was a privilege that words can scarcely describe.

The journey from pregnancy to childbirth is filled with anticipation, challenges, and emotions. Being part of this journey allows me to support and guide women through one of the most significant times in their lives. The trust they place in me and the bond that forms during this process are incredibly fulfilling.

As I continued my training, each delivery and each interaction with expectant mothers reinforced my commitment to this specialty. The blend of surgical skills, patient care, and the miracle of life itself makes obstetrics and gynecology a uniquely rewarding field. It is a specialty that demands compassion, precision, and continuous learning, and I am driven by the desire to provide the best possible care to my patients.

Through my experiences at R.K. Khan Hospital and beyond, I have come to understand that obstetrics and gynecology is not just about delivering babies. It is about empowering women, ensuring their health and well-being, and being a steadfast companion through the various stages of their reproductive lives. This realization has solidified my passion for this field, and I am dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of the women and families I serve.

About Me

I received my undergraduate degree from the Medical University of South Africa( MEDUNSA), now renamed after a political icon, the second president of the African National Congress, Sefako Makgotho. I furthered my studies at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), where I obtained my specialist degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. I also hold a Diploma in HIV management and a Diploma in Obstetrics, through the College of Medicine of South Africa. My research topic for my Masters degree in Medicine, delved into the Interpretation of cardiotocographs (CTGs), which assists doctors and midwives in making decisions about fetal distress. This is one of the main reasons for an emergency caesarean section and its correct assessment can help a doctor decide whether he/she can give a woman in labour, time to deliver or whether a caesarean section is necessary urgently.

My Family

I am a mother of three wonderful children who truly complete my family

As a family, we enjoy swimming , hiking through the slopes of the Drakensburg mountains and having a braai on a Sunday afternoon. Listening to their laughter and secretly giggling about their little fights makes you realize how precious family is. I look forward to being a part of your family’s special journey.
